Family Honorifics

  • Ge: elder brother. May be repeated to be cuter. Such as gege.

  • Di: younger brother. May be repeated to be cuter. Such as didi.

  • Jie: older sister. May be repeated to be cuter. Such as jiejie.

  • Mei: younger sister. May be repeated to be cuter. Such as meimei.

 

Note: People often can add the prefix ah to show closeness. Such as Ah-jie, Ah-di, etc. Note this can also be done with people’s names, such as Ah-Zhao.

 

Note: People also often add a number to differentiate your brothers/sisters since you can have so many. So if you call “gege” not all seven of your brothers respond. So in chinese the way to call your siblings is:

  • Da ge: Eldest brother. Da means eldest. This is the only one that doesn’t follow the number system in Chinese.

  • Er ge: Er means two. Ge means brother. So Er Ge is second brother.

  • San ge: Third brother.

  • Si ge: Fourth brother.

  • Wu ge: Fifth brother

  • Liu ge: Sixth brother 

  • Qi ge: Seventh brother

  • Ba ge: Eighth brother 

  • Jie ge: Ninth brother 

  • … and so on.

Shufu: uncle 

Shushu: uncle

Bofu: uncle 

Gugu: aunt

Gumu: aunt 

Biaoge: male cousin

Biaomei: female cousin 

… and so on.

Martial Art Sect Honorifics

Shifu : A teacher of martial arts. In Chinese, a shifu is a very respected role and is usually a teacher for life. They are more often than not a second father or mother. Often translated as “Master” in some translations. The words that make this up are shi meaning teacher, and fu meaning father.

Shimei: Younger martial sister.

Shijie: Elder marital sister.

Shidi: Younger martial brother.

Shige: Older martial brother.

Shixiong: Older or same aged martial brother.

Shibo: Martial Uncle.

Shigu: Marital Aunt.

Martial Art World Honorifics

Nvxia: Female heroine of the martial arts world.

Daxia: Male hero of the martial arts world.

Daozhang: Senior taoist.

Shangren: Vulnerable one. Respectful way to call a very senior, basically holy monk. 

Dashi: Respectful way to refer to a monk that has some seniority. 

Shitai: Respectful way to refer to a nun. 

Glossary

Jianghu (江湖): The Martial Arts World

Wan Shui Qian Shan Peak (万水千山崖): Ancestor Beichen's abode. Where Beichen's six disciples lived. 

Demonic Cult (魔教): A martial arts sect that is not deemed "righteous" by those in the martial arts world. They may often not abide by laws or kill a lot. Generally considered "evil". But it is made up of normal humans. 

Shifu : A teacher of martial arts. In Chinese, a shifu is a very respected role and is usually a teacher for life. They are more often than not a second father or mother. Often translated as Master in some translations. 

Qingque Sect (青阙宗): One of the six sects of the descendants of Ancestor Beichen. The current number one martial sect in the martial arts world. The only one that stayed at the same spot. 

Luoying Valley (落英谷): Where the Cai Family's home is located. It's somewhere in Southern China where it's spring-like most of the year. MC Cai Zhou's home. Her father is the current Luoying Valley Master. 

Sworn sisterhood/brotherhood (八拜之交): In ancient China (and I think ancient Greece too) you would become sworn brothers to people you felt was as close (or often closer) than family.

Qing gong: Ability to fly (or technically it’s just jumping very far) in martial arts genre. Common.

Qi or Qi gong: Inner energy. What everyone practices when you become a martial artist. The more you have of this, the stronger you are. If you’re familiar with this genre you know what it is. If you’re not familiar, think of it as your mana to do martial arts. The more you have, the more powerful you are.
